When you look up a crypto token on sites like CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap, you’re hit with a wall of numbers, charts, and strange phrases like “FDV” or “circulating supply.” For newcomers, it can feel overwhelming — but once you learn to read a token page, you’ll unlock a whole new level of confidence in your crypto journey.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the key data points, what they mean, and how to use them when researching a token.

Market Cap vs Fully Diluted Value (FDV)

These two numbers are at the top of most token pages — and they tell you how big a project really is.

Market Cap

This is the total value of the circulating tokens.
Formula: Token Price × Circulating Supply

Market cap gives you a rough idea of how big or established a project is, like comparing Bitcoin’s market cap (over $1 trillion) to a smaller altcoin worth just $10 million.

Fully Diluted Value (FDV)

This is the projected value of the token if all possible tokens were already in circulation.
Formula: Token Price × Total Max Supply

FDV is helpful for spotting inflation risk. If a token’s FDV is much higher than its market cap, it means a lot more tokens could enter the market later — potentially driving the price down unless demand grows too.

Circulating Supply vs Total Supply

This section shows you how many tokens exist and how many are still locked or unreleased.

Circulating Supply

These are the tokens currently available to buy, sell, or trade.

Total Supply

This includes all tokens that have been created — including those that are locked, staked, or reserved for future use.

Max Supply

This is the hard cap on how many tokens will ever exist. Bitcoin’s max supply, for example, is 21 million.

Why does this matter? If a token has a small circulating supply but a massive total supply, new tokens could be released in the future — diluting your holdings.

Price Charts: What Are You Looking At?

Price charts usually default to show the token’s price over the last 24 hours. But you can change the time window to see how it performed over the past week, month, or year.

Key things to observe:

Trend direction: Is the price climbing steadily, spiking, or dumping?
Volume: This shows how much of the token was traded during that time. High volume means lots of activity — a good sign of liquidity.
Volatility: Sharp up-and-down movements mean high risk. A smoother chart might show a more stable asset.

Volume and Liquidity

These are often overlooked, but they matter — especially if you want to buy or sell without moving the market.

Volume (24h):

This shows how much value was traded in the last 24 hours. High volume often means better liquidity and less price slippage when trading.

Liquidity:

Not always shown directly, but it refers to how easy it is to buy or sell without impacting the price. Tokens listed on multiple exchanges or large DEX pools usually have better liquidity.

Tokenomics: Unlock Schedules and Vesting

Some tokens have a vesting schedule, meaning tokens are gradually released over time to teams, early investors, or the community.

This can affect price. If a big unlock is coming up, it might flood the market with supply — sometimes pushing prices down.

Where to Find This:

Check the project’s documentation, whitepaper, or third-party sites like TokenUnlocks.

Final Thoughts

Learning to read a token page is one of the most empowering skills you can build in crypto. It turns you from a passive holder into an informed participant who can spot red flags, ask the right questions, and make smarter decisions.

Remember: a flashy price isn’t everything. Understanding market cap, supply mechanics, and volume will help you separate solid projects from hype coins.
